The Parisian Stage (1800-1900)
Charles Beaumont Wicks
The Parisian Stage (1800-1900): Charles Beaumont Wicks is an open-access online digital edition of the eponymous work in five volumes (see bibliographic reference aside).
Mostly using the daily and theatrical press, Wicks aimed at a ‘complete list existing in print of the dramatic productions presented in Paris in the .. nineteenth century’. The Parisian Stage inventories 32,150 works giving (where available) title, subtitle, genre, number of acts, whether the work is in verse or prose, names of the authors, theatre of premiere and date of the first performance. Sponsored by the network ‘France: Musiques, Cultures, 1789-1918’, the work of digitisation and data cleansing was led by David Day, and supported by Brigham Young University.
The search engine not only allows the display of Wicks' data, but it also gives access to the Archives du Spectacle (LADS) database to display the additional information that is being systematically collected using the texts and scores in open access (ballet masters, decorators, actors, singers, dancers ...). To this day, we have collected additional data on 7,475 plays out of 32,150.
